Our Approach to Spinal Care

Spinal health is complex, with various medical professionals offering differing theories. At RD Chiro Leichhardt, we aim to demystify spinal care. While “manipulation” is often associated with chiropractic treatment, it’s just one of the many tools our chiropractors use to alleviate stress on the nervous system, joints, and muscles. Our team is extensively trained in manipulative therapy and employs thorough diagnostic procedures to determine the most effective treatment for each patient.

Collaborative Care

Determining if chiropractic treatment suits your condition is essential. Medical literature on spinal diagnosis and management is continually evolving. Therefore, we adopt an integrated approach, collaborating with local GPs, allied health professionals, and orthopedic surgeons. This ensures our patients receive accurate diagnoses, appropriate treatments, and coordinated care.

Use of Diagnostic Imaging

We don’t routinely use imaging for every patient. Our detailed subjective and objective examinations often suffice for an accurate clinical diagnosis. However, in certain cases, additional imaging, such as MRI scans, may be necessary to:

  • Determine the shape and size of a herniation
  • Assess the degree of nerve root compression
  • Evaluate the extent of spinal degenerative changes

These insights are crucial for addressing patient concerns about prognosis, the effectiveness of conservative treatments, and the potential need for surgical intervention.

Safety of Cervical Manipulation

We conduct comprehensive clinical evaluations to ensure our treatments are appropriate for each patient, including cervical spine manipulation. While all manual therapies carry inherent risks, our practitioners take necessary diagnostic steps to minimize any potential harm. Spinal manipulation has both relative and absolute contraindications, primarily related to:

  • Bone weakening conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, bone infections)
  • Joint instability (e.g., severe ligament sprains, fractures, hypermobility syndromes like Marfan Syndrome)

Our conservative practice approach ensures patient safety remains paramount.
